Simon Toole – Lecturer in Sport Development, Ulster University

The coaching process is a continuous and dynamic interaction between the coach and the player. It relies on effective communication, goal alignment, and ongoing support to drive growth and success.

In this lecture, Simon will introduce fundamental principles, key stages, and essential techniques for effective coaching. Key topics covered will include coaching models, the stages of the coaching process, deliberate practice and essential coaching skills.

Simon is currently a Lecturer and part-time PhD Researcher within the School of Sport and Exercise Science at Ulster University, having joined the institution in May 2024 following 16½ years at Sport Northern Ireland.

His teaching at Ulster spans various aspects of sports development and coaching, while his research is presently focused on the group dynamics of high-performance sport coaching teams. Previously at Sport Northern Ireland Simon held a number of roles, mainly involving various aspects of people development, including supporting the development of coaches within various domains, building coach developer workforce capability, sport investment management, and advancing people development systems, strategy and insight.

Coaches who hold valid UEFA B or A Diplomas will receive 5 CPD credits on attendance.
