Embedding Psychological Skills in Your Coaching
Goalkeeping Workshop Synopsis
As well as the technical, tactical and physical components, goalkeeping requires strong psychological demands. The goalkeeper must make decisions under pressure, recover from mistakes, communicate effectively, manage uncertainty, deal with isolation, maintain concentration during periods of inactivity and repeatedly perform after potentially high-consequence errors.
The session provides coaches with practical strategies for embedding psychological skills into normal technical, tactical and game-based practices. It draws on coaching principles around representative practice, decision-making, autonomy, challenge and reflection.
The workshop explores five key questions:
1. What psychological skills does my goalkeeper need?
2. Where are those skills already present in my practice?
3. How can I deliberately increase or decrease psychological challenge?
4. How do my coaching behaviours influence the goalkeeper psychologically?
5. How can I review psychological development alongside technical and tactical development?
